| Title: | "Chronotherapeutic Techniques in the Management of Bipolar Disorder" | ||
| Description: | The acute, pharmacologic treatment of manic and depressive mood states often fails to achieve quick, complete, lasting and safe remissions. Chronotherapeutic interventions which act by shifting circadian rhythms and sleep, can produce rapid and sustained reductions in affective symptoms. In this workshop, early-career and more experienced clinicians will learn how to expand their therapeutic options with sleep deprivation-based approaches, bright light therapy, dawn simulation and other rhythm-shifting methods. Starting with a brief review of circadian neurobiology and sleep regulation, the workshop will provide detailed, practical information about each chronotherapeutic modality and how they can be combined successfully with pharmacologic treatments. Presentations will include case examples and encourage clinical questions and discussion. Based on the first treatment manual published for this emerging subspecialty (Wirz-Justice et al., 2009), workshop participants will acquire the practical knowledge necessary to know how and when to administer chronotherapeutic interventions in their clinical practices. | ||
