Samuel Gershon Awards for Junior Investigators

The International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) recognizes the vital role of developing the next generation of leaders in the field of bipolar disorders and will offer 2 awards for original research publication submissions. In order to promote research interest in bipolar disorders in developing countries, one of the awards will be reserved for those from low and middle-income countries, as defined by the 2011 World Bank Classification. The awards will be presented in conjunction with the 5th Biennial Conference of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders to be held in Istanbul from 14-17 March 2012.
Eligibility: These awards are open to psychiatric trainees, postgraduate students, and junior faculty up to and including the Assistant Professor rank from around the world, independent of age, nationality, sex, or race. Winners from previous years are not eligible to apply.
Developing Country Criteria: In order for your application to qualify as a developing country submission, a statement from an advisor/mentor certifyingthat the research was conducted in a developing country must be submitted with your application.  This statement may be contained in the letter of support requested in the “Instructions” section of this announcement.
The Awards: The awards, which are contingent upon attendance at the ISBD meeting in 2012, will consist of

  • Economy air travel up to $1500 to be reimbursed by ISBD upon proof of purchase
  • 3 nights lodging based on single-occupancy rates and booked by ISBD
  • An award plaque, and
  • Waived registration fees for the 5th Biennial Conference of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders.

Awards will be based on the originality of the content, as well as the significance of the findings reported, and will be evaluated by an international scientific panel under the auspices of the ISBD. The applicant’s potential for long term commitment and contributions to the field of bipolar disorder will also be evaluated. All panel decisions will be final.
Educational Component: After an initial review by the Awards Committee, a subset of applicants will be shortlisted and will receive a full peer review of their manuscript by the ISBD Research Committee. These reviews are intended to help these applicants prepare their manuscripts for submission to a peer-reviewed English language journal. Please note, the award results have no bearing on a publication decision by the Bipolar Disorders Journal
Award Presentation: Winners will be expected to present their paper in an oral session at the ISBD meeting in Istanbul.
Manuscript Requirements: The topics of the papers presented must address aspects of bipolar disorder. The manuscript should be based on original work that has not been published elsewhere, and should demonstrate significant contribution from the author submitting for this award (i.e. first/last author on the paper). The paper format should be submitted as an article of 2500-3500 words, suitable for publication.
Notification: All applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by January 15th 2012and winners will be expected to make plans to attend the meeting upon notification.

All items below are required for your application to be reviewed.

  • An updated, abridged Curriculum Vitae (2 page max), including a list of publications if present
  • A brief statement of intent (250 word max) explaining why you are applying for the award
  • A brief letter of support from a sponsor, and
  • An original, unpublished manuscript addressing some aspect of bipolar disorder and formatted for publication, including the title, a list of authors and affiliations, abstract, properly linked figures and tables, and references.

Important: All applicants must also submit an abstract (300 word max) corresponding to their  award manuscript on the congress website at http://www.onlinebildiri.com/isbd2012.php by the September 15th 2011 deadline above.  Please note, you will be required to create a login once you reach this page. Applicants who are not selected for the Samuel Gershon Award may still be considered for poster presentation at the meeting; however, abstracts must be submitted on the conference website in order to be included in the abstract book for the conference.
